Prashant Kishor Enters Bankipur Bypoll, Calls It a 'Referendum' on Bihar Government

PATNA, July 6(BiharTimes): In a significant political development ahead of the upcoming bypoll, Jan Suraaj Party founder Prashant Kishor on Sunday announced his candidature from the prestigious Bankipur Assembly constituency in Patna, framing the contest as a “referendum” on the performance of the BJP-led government in Bihar.

Addressing a packed press conference amid enthusiastic party workers, Kishor urged the nearly four lakh voters of the constituency to “vote for making a difference,” signaling a direct appeal for public mandate beyond traditional party lines.

The Bankipur seat fell vacant after senior BJP leader Nitin Nabin, who had represented the constituency since 2006, resigned following his election to the Rajya Sabha in April this year. The bypoll is scheduled to be held on July 30.

Kishor’s entry into the fray has added a new dimension to the contest, potentially reshaping political equations in the state capital. Known for his background as a political strategist, this election marks a crucial test of his transition into active electoral politics under the Jan Suraaj banner.

Meanwhile, the opposition space appears divided, with the Congress and the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) reportedly at odds over extending support to Kishor. The lack of consensus within the opposition bloc could influence the dynamics of the triangular contest, where the BJP is expected to field a strong candidate to retain its traditional stronghold.

Political observers view the Bankipur bypoll as more than a routine electoral exercise, as it may offer insights into shifting voter sentiments ahead of the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections.

With high stakes, prominent faces, and evolving alliances, all eyes are now on Bankipur as the campaign gains momentum in the coming weeks.
